Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Léoville Poyferré begins sporting a veil of cedar, opening out to reveal profound notions of crème de cassis, warm kirsch, Black Forest cake and Indian spices plus hints of chargrilled meats and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, the taut, muscular black fruit has a solid frame of firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with loads of savory nuances. Aging is anticipated to be for 18 months in barriques, 80% new. The current blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

This is so powerful and dense with amazing tannin quality that reminds me of dense clouds, because they are agile and light. Multilayered. Extremely long, too. Punchy! One of the best wines I have ever had from here.

Description

The origin of the estate dates back to 1638. At that time, Léoville was the largest domain in the Médoc. Since then, it has been fragmented over time and generations.The legacy of the grand vin of Léoville Poyferré began in 1840, consecrated as a Second Classified Growth fifteen years later. Didier Cuvelier has presided over the destiny of this gem since 1979.


Terroir

Precise, meticulous orchestration

Between Margaux and Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde Estuary, Saint-Julien is a small appellation of 920 hectares.As far as the eye can see, the land is covered with pebbles that naturally regulate soil temperature. Gravel, sand and clay are the other components of this geological alchemy, the result of sedimentary deposits by the Garonne in the Quaternary period. The vineyards of the appellation stretch over gravelly ridges that have been finely chiseled by erosion and designed to promote excellent drainage. Man could not have done better.


Meticulous soil care

The vineyard of Château Léoville Poyferré sits on gravely, well drained soils that create a balanced environment for the vines. Soil analysis is the basis for vineyard practices, which are adapted to the condition of the vineyard (tillage, earthing up…)


Work in the vineyard

As in the old days, each vineyard worker is responsible for his or her vineyard plots and prunes them in the traditional Médoc method.Prior to vegetation, manure is added. In early May, various canopy management techniques are employed according to vine growth and desired results.


Fixing the harvest date

About three weeks before harvest, Didier Cuvelier, Michel Rolland, Isabelle Davin (Château’s oenologist), Bruno Clenet (Vineyard Manager) et Didier Thomann (Cellar Master) go through the entire vineyard to taste the grapes, which completes the results from analysis. Plans for the harvest begin to develop.


The Harvest

Since 1994, grapes have been harvested into small crates. The grape bunches are first sorted by hand on tables before destemming, then a second time by optical sorting maching before crushing. Each vineyard plot is vinifided individually in one of the fifty-six stainless steel vats, of which twenty seven are double-walled.




Vinification

Vinification is mainly focused on the quality and finesse of the tannins, characterized by research and innovation in maintaining qualitative tradition and lineage of the style of Léoville Poyferré. The 27 double-walled tanks are used for cold pre-fermentation macerations for 6 days. The extraction of color occurs gradually and pure fruit aromas are revealed. Particular care is taken in the selection of barrels for subtle oak in harmony with the wines. The wines are aged in barrels for 18-20 months. Michel Rolland provides advice for vinification and blending.

The vineyard

This Red wine (Classified Growth) from Saint-Julien is made with a vineyard that has an area of 40 hectares by Château Léoville Poyferré. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The harvest for this wine are 100% hand harvested.

Into the cellars

This wine has remained 20 months in Oak barrels. For this wine, the estate has made the choice to incorporate 80% of new barrels.

Saint-Julien

The A.O.C Saint-Julien (968 hectares) was formalized in 1936. Located between Pauillac and Margaux both geographically and in style, it is one of the smallest Medoc appellation but the most consistent in quality. 18 active producers including 11 Classified Growths.
The appellation extends over 4.8 kilometers long by 3.2 kilometers wide and offers wines whose tannins have an incomparable finesse. What characterizes Saint-Julien is the terroir and the micro-climate. The terroir is a subtle blend between the contributions of stony alluvium from the Garonne and those from the Dordogne. The contributions therefore from the Pyrenees and the Massif Central. You should know that this agglomeration of rocks slowly broken then spread over the millennia is an exceptional case.
