Blended of 44% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Potensac features chocolate box and Sichuan pepper scents with a core of cassis, warm blackberries, kirsch and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, it has a great core of expressive black fruits, grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing with a red fruit lift.

With its fine tannins and ripe fruit aromas and flavors, this wine brings out all the elements of the vintage: great structure and great fruit. It's not a powerful wine, but is stylish and likely to be ready to drink within 10 years.

Open-knit, with a mix of bramble, sweet tobacco and steeped red and black currant fruit flavors. A lightly roasted apple wood note and a flash of iron check in on the finish, adding spine. Drink now through 2029. 23,333 cases made.

What a racy and focused Potensac with wonderful density and finesse as well as a firm and polished tannins that hold the whole thing together. A beautiful, reasoned young red. One of best Potensacs in a long time.

Description

The estate has been in the same family since time immemorial and has always been handed down by women. The current owner, Jean-Hubert Delon, inherited the estate from his paternal grandmother, Georgette Liquard. Although close to the river, Potensac is situated on a high point of land in North Medoc. Because of this position, the site has been populated since ancient times. The name « Medoc » in fact comes from « medio aquae » which means « in the middle of the waters ».

Planted on the best quality soils in the Ordonnac district, the vineyards now extend over 60 hectares on a terroir where the typical characteristics of each grape variety express themselves very distinctly and give the wine superb ageing potential.

The terroir

Château Potensac's vineyards extend mainly over hilly mounds with a limestone subsoil covered with clay and gravel outcrops containing a high proportion of gravel ("graves"). These limestone soils are very similar to those found in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. On this very special terroir, some plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc planted over 80 years ago still produce perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. The hamlet of Potensac was already cited in the first edition of Féret for the special characteristics and longevity of its wines.

Dans les chais

In addition to the exceptional know-how acquired by the Delon family at Château Léoville Las-Cases, Château Potensac has also benefited from numerous investments which allow it to maintain itself at the same technical level as the best current areas of Bordeaux. The traditional aging is done in new barrels with a real know-how in the choice of the suppliers. Aging in barrels takes place for a sufficient period to allow optimal bottle keeping over time. It is also very important because it highlights the “finesse” of a wine that is coming from an exceptional terroir. On the palate, the wine is pure and powerful, the tannins dense and spicy, and the finish of great depth with glorious aromas. Because of these qualities, Château Potensac is often considered to represent the « pure Medoc style ».

Médoc

The Médoc appellation combines three types of terroir: the Pyrenees gravel, the Garonne gravel, and the clay-limestone soils. Given the importance of the size of the appellation, these terroirs are characterized by an extreme variety of soils and subsoils. The Médoc enjoys an exceptional geographical location and a unique underground. Gravel rumps give birth to great wines. The blend of Merlot (the most important grape variety of the AOC), with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec give the wines charm and balance. The mouth of the Médoc is well structured, full on a frame of tasty tannins.
